It depends on the severity of the the lp. Hot Rod had surgery a year ago as his was a grade 4 and his leg was bowed out. He's doing well now and is on Dasuquin.

Maggie was just diagnosed with low grade 2. You would not know she had any issues whatsoever the way she jumps and stands all the time! She is also on Dasuquin now. The vet said that she would not recommend surgery for Maggie at this time and she may never need it.

Hope this helps. Your vet should be able to tell you what grade. It sounds as though it might be a grade 1 -2 if he is not worried about it. You should ask him about supplements and exercises to strengthen the joints. good luck.
