I have always had those steps for my 2 as well. They were taught to use them from the beginning - and they do.
I have two sets put together so that they reach our bed. I have at least one set (and sometimes two) at every couch, loveseat, bed or bench at our house.
One tip - I put pillows everywhere I thought they may want to jump off of when my 2 were little. We have tile floors and I didn't want them to jar their joints.
