I opted for ottomans instead of the plastic-lightweight stair steps.

They're much more stable - and the one large step between the floor and furniture is perfect. Not to mention - it looks much better!

I have a black leather-look ottoman that I bought at Pottery Barn in the family room and another one in our bedroom.
