Default Crate vs. X-Pen

Curtains aren't an option, I have two large windows in my room and it would cost a small fortune. I've thought about switching to the crate and putting a blanket over 3 sides, but I just spent $80 on the darn xpen, lol. Guess I'll have to grin and bear it for now. She loves to sleep, so hopefully once she can cuddle with Oliver and I she'll chill and sleep longer.
From my experience with my two, the crate has worked very well. My female is more high-strung than my male but as long as she is sleeping in our bed and not her own, she will sleep in with us or wake us up to go potty and then goes right back to bed with us and stays there until we get up - whatever time that is (weekdays 5:00 a.m. & weekends between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.). Our youngest yorkie pup, Riley, who's 5 1/2 months is a different story. He is still in the crate at night and we cover it much like you would a bird cage at night - that let's him know it's bed time. He does wake up sometimes (especially since he has been injured with fractured leg) but as long as we take him out to potty and then return him to the cage, cover it and then go back to bed, he will go back to sleep. I think, if he were allowed to have access to his pen during the night he would be very vocal about being let out but since we are controlling the situation by way of enclosed crate, it helps him know that it is bed time and not play time.
