We actually don't use NSAIDs here b/c of Ellie's liver. We used something else after her spay. And this is where some vets go into the pain is okay thing. They think it's okay to not medicate after an abdominal surgery. I completely disagree with that one. Even with the liver problem, her vet was very clear that Ellie would be in pain and that she needed meds and I am so happy that she didn't try to withhold them...

But I don't want to take this thread off topic anymore...

Wondering what the original poster decided to do.
I think the only way to get around the Rimadyl if you don't want to use it is to call the vet.

yeah they did not give dex pain meds after his neuter and i was upset and went first thing in am to get him a shot as i was really upset as thought they gave him pain meds. I did not know anything back then. Now i would only do tramadol even if it does not have an anti-inflammatory in it.
I am definitely not against pain meds just NSAIDS. Our bc dentist will not use nsaids he says they are not safe and many specialists i deal with cringe when i mentioned them so i think they proceed with them with caution where as vets do not which upsets me even when i asked for tramadol the vet swore to me it was safe to give with steroids even though i knew differently and read they are never to be mixed. I trusted him as he was the professional but in consulting specialists they said he never should have given dd that drug
