You are supposed to make them match unless you do a french manicure on your toes or your hands than you can have a color on the opposite.
So I agree with the old rule!!
I get mine done and this is what I do. If I use a color I on my toes I will do french or the same color on my finger nails. If I do a french on my toes than I do a color on my finger nails.
