You say, "he sometimes yelps when he is picked up . . . also won't drink water for some reason." I say, not drinking water is very serious, and yelping when they are picked up indicates pain. I agree with the others, I'd see a vet ASAP. My son's dog occasionally yelped when he was picked up , and they didn't know if it was a spinal problem or intestinal problem, lots of tests later, he was diagnosed with pancreatitis.
