Don't forget that the adrenal gland makes some testosterone in both males and females, and this varies greatly between individual dogs. Testosterone is the hormone that is thought to be responsible for marking. Some dogs will never mark, unless they are around other dogs, and different things can cause the adrenal glands to produce more testosterone, of course the testes make the bulk of testosterone in males.
