I think regardless of where you live, $12 is very inexpensive for a petsitter visit for someone to drive to your home, feed/water/play with your pets for 30-45 minutes and to provide peace of mind.
The cost of veterinary care will greatly exceed these costs if the dog gets sick due to all the various issues raised by other posters.
