I have never owned a dog that barked to go out..funny.. But we use a bell and my dogs use that to let us know. Not all of them have it down but it takes some dogs longer to catch onto the bell system.
My chihuahua doesn't go outside to go potty, she uses a litter box. But when they are out of water she will go and ring the bell, it's funny how she started doing that, I cannot remember how I figured out thats what she wanted, it's been awhile since she first did it.
I tried to litter box train Pennie, but she was so sick the first 4-5 weeks we had her and she was not interested in using the box. she did use it when we put her in it sometimes, and sometimes she used a potty pad. Now she goes outside, but poops in the house once in awhile. I just let them out a lot.
But I don't see a need for my dogs to bark, because at this point if they really did have a good reason to bark I wouldn't know it.. to many false alarms..lol.. or "the boy who cried wolf"..hehe
