If you think it was just one, a bath in Dawn dishsoap would kill it, but not its eggs. If you actually want to treat, Frontline or Advantage is fine (unless you want to go holistic, and in that case, I'm no help because, well, that's not my thing). The mainstream products do have side effects and, IMO, have the potential to cause serious issues over time, but sometimes there is no choice.

You can get these products through your vet (usually don't need an appt.) or some pet stores sell them. Stick with Advantage or Frontline (or maybe Comfortis or Revolution although I wouldn't use them). No Hartz, Zodiac, etc.

Btw, not everything totally dies off during winter in MI. That's why most vets here have started strongly recommending heartworm meds year-round.
