| OMG! I just found a living flea on Teddy. Please help! Our Teddy is alway so itchy so today I decides just to check out his skin for any rashes (he's already had 2 in the past 5 months) While i was doing this i saw a flea crawling on his back skin. I couldnt believe it. He has never had them before (so we know of) but the last time he was in the vet they didnt see any trace of them. We did just have a little squirrel break in, in out house a couple weeks ago (wont even go there!!) and i am worried he got them fom that? How do dogs get them in the winter?! Also I leterally this morning gave him and our other yorkie (Pippo) Interceptor their monthly tab. Do i have to go to the vet or can i just buy somthing for Teddy (and Pippo??) Im kind of freaking out!

| Do you give them tick meds too like Frontline? We have this white powder you can put down that will kill fleas. I think it's called diaccotomous earth (I know I spelled it wrong). You can also call your vet and they'll give you a tab they can take that will kill all living fleas within 30 min. |

| I see you are in Michigan where the weather is a bit colder, ok A LOT colder than where I am at so if it were me, I think I would be treating my house and carpets.

| If you think it was just one, a bath in Dawn dishsoap would kill it, but not its eggs. If you actually want to treat, Frontline or Advantage is fine (unless you want to go holistic, and in that case, I'm no help because, well, that's not my thing). The mainstream products do have side effects and, IMO, have the potential to cause serious issues over time, but sometimes there is no choice. You can get these products through your vet (usually don't need an appt.) or some pet stores sell them. Stick with Advantage or Frontline (or maybe Comfortis or Revolution although I wouldn't use them). No Hartz, Zodiac, etc. Btw, not everything totally dies off during winter in MI. That's why most vets here have started strongly recommending heartworm meds year-round.

| ok, thank for the input. I can even go to the local PSP and grab some frontline. I give that to them in the warm months so know allll about it! I think i should call the vet too and see what the rec for the house. I am actually about to switch vets because i am mad at ours! so i am not sure if i should call our reg vet or the one we are switching to.

I've been told a flea can be dormant for up to two years, so even the cold freezing weather doesn't kill them all out. Although I do think fleas are much worse in warmer climates. Chances are if you've got one there are probably more and I would most likely treat the house, bedding and dogs.

| I can totally relate with you on this, when I first got Fiona she was invested with fleas, nothing worked for her, then got them again this past summer, and we switched her over to revolution, which seemed to do the trick.... you really need to wash bedding daily, vaccumm, vaccumm, vaccumm, and change the bags! you may need to treat your house as well! Good luck!
