The small dog was a wise decision with your bad back. I have had three surgeries on my back [I'm way older than you!
] and one of the main things my doctor stressed was walk, walk walk!! So that's another plus for buying a dog! It's difficult for me to walk ... for so long I was a jogger!
At least I can walk Toto!
Another thing I avoid is bathing Toto in the bathtub because bending over the tub is also bad for your back! Until we have a "grooming room" for Toto, I bathe her in my kitchen sink ... no brushing or anything in there ... just bathe her because I don't have to bend! Then I just sterilize everything and I don't have the think "yuck" I just bathed a dog in my kitchen sink"!! LOL
