did she tone it afterward? I am not familiar with the particular type of highlights that you got but I know that in the past if they didn't tone my hair that it would not look right or would look too fakey (mine is med brown naturally)... if you like the lightness of them but not the tone you could have them put a toner on it to get more of the look that you want.
I am not sure if this is something that you could do your self or not, but at my salon it isn't a very expensive part of the process, and makes a huge difference in overall look. I am not a pro but thought that I would throw it out there
