I used to cover the crate with a blanket that was knitted, so it had little holes in it. It made my boys feel warm and secure and they never whined for me when the blanket was there. However, I think the waking up in the crate is an internal clock thing... not a sunlight thing. On weekends my boys are up at 6-630am just because we get up that early on week days. I let them out and we all go back to bed and they won't get up again until I do!
