I guess my question is does a dog wake up due to an internal clock, or due to sunlight? I've started crate training Ruger, and so far so good, but I could use a little more sleep in the morning.

In my bed Ruger will sleep pretty much as late as I do, but in the crate he is up at the crack of dawn. Would blackout curtains help? Or maybe if I cover the crate like a parakeet, but then he can't see me before he goes to sleep (keeps him quiet).
