I train to the outside, and I can say with confidence...the key is to take them out a LOT. My Zoey wasn't fully housebroken when I got her at just a couple weeks past a year old, last March. I took her out probably once an hour (during the day) for the first couple of weeks we had her. She's been perfect.
I think the key is to never give them the opportunity to screw up...and tons of praise and hallelujahs every time they do the tiniest squirt. I don't do treats for this...just figurative handstands and cartwheels, lol. |
I agree with this post 100 percent. Consistency and praise is the key, once you fiind a method that is working, stick to it!! I had to take Tucker out (after switching from using peepads) every hour from 6 am untill 9/10 pm untill he was just about 7 months old. He was crated at night and didnt mess in his crate after the 3 month mark, I was however still taking him out occassionaly if he whined to go out. It finally clicked at about 7 months and he started to go to the door on his own, however like I said in my previous post I still need to stay on top of him with it. He needs to go about every 2 hours during the day, longer if he is crated but since Im home most of the time the only time he is in his crate is at night.
It does take awhile for some pups, but if you stay on them they will get it!

good luck..
