While it is not common for a pup to get heartworms while on preventatives, it is possible. I test my pups yearly. They have a yearly check up anyway and the test does not cost so much that I would take any kind of a risk like that. If you never test and one does get heartworms, by the time you find out they will be terribly ill.

I personally would rethink this.
