a similar thing happened to my dog. He was a cocker spaniel. My neighbors had recently moved in and had a pit bull mix. A few months after they moved in, their pit mix dug a hole under the fence, and attacked my dog. He was trying to take my dog back to his yard. My neighbor came over and took his pit back to his yard. My dogs intestines were all over the place. I was a little girl so it has scarred my since. My mom called animal control and they took away the pit and euthanized him that same night. Turns out he had killed a cat before. My neighbors felt horrible and paid for half of our new dog, a golden retriever, she is in my picture album.
