Why not consult a lawyer just to check on what can be done. Maybe a strong letter written by him/her with a suggestion for payment might scare them into cooperating and making an offer of restitution.
I am so sorry your family had to witness this. I can't think of anything more horrifying for a little dog or for a family to witness.
Pay no attention to the couple of posts that sound like they are scolding you. That is the last thing you need right now but those members are fairly new to the board and newbies don't always pick up on the finer points of message boards. We know you came here for help and comfort not lectures. You are in pain and that is enough for you to experience right now.
