An SLR is one that you can change the lenses etc. The D just stands for digital. Most have an automatic setting but you are also able to adjust the aperture, shutter speed and ISO, which is film speed except that they do not use film because they are digital.
The point and shoot are fully automatic. They have a few different setting such as portrait and landscape, but you cannot set the shutter speed or aperture opening and ISO.
