I think it really depends on what way you and your vet want to go with it.
Ellie has a liver issue. We don't know what it is, but it's treated as MVD. I, her vet, and her internist can't see supplementing as a bad thing. It can't hurt and it "may" protect her liver from further damage which is a good enough reason for me to do it. I know many people like Marin (or Denamarin) for this, but some don't like the small amount of liver in it.

If she were mine, yes, I would supplement.
You could start with SAMe (Denosyl).
