They ARE dogs in the same way someone's precious little baby Johnny IS a human. So what if someone refers to your dog as a dog? It's only an identifying term There are more important issues regarding your pups, IMO

That's about trhe way I feel when someone actually calls them my "son" or my "daughter"

And dogs understand being treted like dogs, it makes sense to them. they do not understand being treated like people. It confuses them.
