It happens because this truly is an addiction, just like drug addiction. People may love their children, but the power of the addiction is stronger. Drug addicts lose their children everyday as a result of their not being able to stop.
I know it doesn't make sense to anyone not afflicted with addiction, but after years of dealing with family and addiction I'm all to aware.
What you experienced with your hoarder is common. My Mom was somewhat like a hoarder, though never even close to those people on the show. But, she was very stubborn and emotional when we would try to clear out a few things, after she got elderly and we had to move her.
