Yeah, I am almost sure your little Toby was trying to protect you

! One time, my mom was pulling my arm ( just jokingly) and my little dog, Vinny, started to bark and growl at her!

And when she stopped he stopped! I was suprised too! I read in a book that Yorkies are good guard dogs; they can hear noises we can't, and they will start barking to let you know. If your dog is healthy and loves you a lot, he will almost surely try to protect you!
