The only difference for me is that I had them in a playpen (Gizmo)/xpen with a bed in it (Kandi). Both were close enough that I could hear them and reach out to stroke and comfort them during the night. When they were old enough and trained enough, we taught them how to go up and down special stairs we made at the foot of our bed. When we felt confident that each could do that on their own, then we started letting each one sleep with us if they wanted to. We also have beds in the room if they would rather sleep alone.
One word of warning...it really does become their bed. This morning I woke up once again in a weird position because Gizmo decided he wanted to sleep on my pillow and Kandi wanted the foot of the bed to herself.
