You can use whatever, but pet stores sell the metal gate types for $60 or so. Baby gates are cheaper I believe. Crating is not cruel. Scruffs loves his crate. He sleeps in there, eats chew toys in there, and goes in when I say "crate." He isn't sad when I leave, he just sleeps and I know he is safe. Sometimes when I pet sit I leave the other dog out in my room if the owner doesn't bring a crate, and Scruffs is fine.
