Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics of the AVMA

This is the American Veterinary Medical Associations Code of Ethics... There is lots of good information on this site as far as veterinary patient rights. I would higly suggest that every pet owner familiarize themselves with the Professional Behaviors Sections. That aside, I am sorry for your loss and would like to say that it disgusts me knowing that this has happened.
