Confused Breeders

Hi everyone. My daughter and I have been looking into buying a yorkie. She fell in love with one adorable little girl at the pet store about a month ago, but I do not believe in supporting pet stores/puppy mills. So I told her I would look for a breeder and I'd get her one from there. We live in Brooklyn, NY. It is impossible to find a good breeder around here that is reasonable. They all want between 1,600-2,500 for one of their puppies, I cannot see myself paying that, I think it is ridiculous. I would be willing to spend $1,000 or under. I am not planning to show this dog, all I need is a pet quality female yorkie. I don't understand this. If their motive is to "better the breed" and it's "not about the money" then why do they want an arm and a leg for a puppy? I understand that they do genetic testing and I understand the money that they put into it but this is what makes people resort to pet stores and backyard breeders. In my opinion, if their true intention is to better the breed they wouldn't be charging as much as they do. My daughter is already telling me she thinks she's just going to go back to the pet store for the dog. It makes me sick. Does anyone know of any good breeders in the tri-state area that sell pet quality yorkies for reasonable prices (around $1,000)?
