I put the SB-400 on my Nikon D90 & was thrilled with it. Best thing was its light weight. I felt that I could leave in on the camera full time, use it instead of the built in flash, & have the advantage of flash bounce off my low 8' ceilings.

I was experimenting with the camera with no flash under poor light conditions, & noticed how well the pictures looked without any flash. Of course I optimized the camera settings for low light. I started wondering why I needed a flash of any kind (of course a flash is needed at times), & a second one at that.

So, I decided to compare the built in flash with the SB-400. I didn't see any difference. Now in fairness, the test may have been flawed, but if the SB-400 was better, it wasn't much better for my home pictures. So, I returned the SB-400, & will think about whether I really want the cute little SB-400 or the more powerful next step up bulkier SB-600.

In the meantime, I ordered the Nikon Wireless Remote Close-Up Speedlight System (batteries not included). I'm going to specialize in macro photography, at least for a while. The batteries were delivered today, & the system is scheduled for delivery tomorrow.

This is great info! It sounds like I might want to just get the camera at first and see how happy I am with the shots before I invest in the flash. I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out that well for you, but I am glad you were able to return it.
