For example, in the Yorkie, I don't like that the standard is simply not to exceed 7 pounds, which means that a 1-2lb dog is "standard" for a Yorkie. I personally think that is no life for a dog and not healthy, yet they continue to get smaller and smaller. It seems nowadays all a dog show is for the owners to parade around showing off their dogs. I'm sorry if my comment offends anybody and I understand this doesn't apply to every person who enjoys dog showing, I understand for some it's more of a hobby. My idea of a dog show... to see Golden Retrievers retrieving, Border Collies herding, Pointers hunting, Yorkies ratting... what they were originally BRED and intended to do, not be parading around a ring and molded and shaped into the human desires of how a dog is supposed to look. |
Bettering the breed as you say should be the most important part, your so right.

And as for what Jeanie K posted "
But why they don't adjust their standards when they see it is creating health issues, is beyond me. how can you say you love the breed and you love the dogs when you are knowingly producing unhealthy dogs.
It doesn't make sense. Does a stupid ribbon mean that much that people are willing to produce crippled dogs just to win it?"
It must to some which is the sad part of showing that needs to stop. Also some of the standards such as the yorkie's should I agree, say a minimum weight as well. Th good thing is many of the show breeders I've seen are not breeding for the tinies though thank god.
