Heart Guard contains Ivermectin, is a bit risky. Especially if the dog is on the smaller side. I recomend Sentinel or Intercepter (they're pretty much prescribed according to weight). And dependent on how the mosquitoe infestation, tics, mites and parasites are in your area, how outdoor active you dog is, Revolution. There are vets that do not recommend Revolution or feel it is not necessary for a heartworm med, because of the area in which you live. So, the alternative is Frontline Plus or K-9 Advantics (each of these are a bit more accurate for administering according to weight). How I use it, is 24 hours before a bath I apply it (this is per vet instructions this is plenty of time to leave it on for it to work) the next day I give a bath. It's always worked for me. But, each person has their own preferance and it's up to what you and your vet have decided upon.
