You mean, you were in A mode and using AF but nothing was focusing in front? Were you using a zoom or a prime?

If you were too close overall for the lens, then the lens wouldn't have been able to find a focus point at all...it would've just kept "hunting" if in AF mode....but I'm not totally sure what happened...

Also...if light was just too low, the camera may not be able to focus either, no matter what, so in that case - forced into Manual...which is exactly what you did...
