Yes...and/or, if using Auto Focus...use Aperture Priority Mode (*if using DSLR) and open your aperture ALL the way (like 1.4, 1.8 - whatever is wide open for you)...you will want your flash OFF, so may need to increase ISO way up. Wide Apertures (aka - "low" Fstop numbers like f1.4 etc...create bokeh)....{edited to add: I'm sorta talking Prime lenses here too, btw, in terms of forcing the aperture....}

IF using point and shoot, you might try "Flower Mode" or "Close Up" mode to get a blurred background....
