Treating your new puppy like an infant and getting it medical care at the first sign of trouble are keys to keeping it healthy.

Many new owners wait too long to get the puppy to the vet because they don't want the expense.
this is why when i go out i take my shoes off when i come home not to bring stuff like this home and if i go to a dog show, pet store, pet expo, etc I come home and wash my shoes i was wearing as i do not want to take any chances with my dog getting sick as i have an immune suppressed yorkie from a backyard breeder. She is hypothyroid, atopic dermatitis, mvd, and she has luxating patella in back 2 legs. She is basically a mess and has been since she was 6 months old. I paid $1300 which was not cheap. I also have a friend who searched out did all her homework and bought from one of the best breeders and paid $3,000 to get a good quality healthy dog and she ended up with a dog that had liver shunt and now has 25% use of his kidney after having the liver shunt surgery. She has spent over 25,000 on this dog. She did her homework and still ended up with problems. I also have a pet store pup as i had no clue and did not do my homework before buying a yorkie and he is healthier than my byb dog. I paid $1500. I have seen people pay $3k for a pet store pup. I do not think it is always about the money but i do think people like myself do not educate ourselves prior to getting a dog and do not research that when a dog gets sick it is going to be thousands. I have spent over 20k probably 25k plus at this point and luckily i have it. I wish i did my homework. I also have a rescue maltese who is from a show breeder and she is in the best health of all so having 3 dogs one puppy mill, one rescue/show breeder, and one byb i feel i have learned alot. My byb is AKC and i thought that was to mean i had a good quality yorkie. I found that really does not mean much as she is a mess. I understand I made a mistake in not doing my homework but i do know it is a living thing there is no guarantee even if you pay 3k plus for a yorkie but i would hope a responsible breeder is bile acid testing and not inbreeding as if we inbred humans we would have a mess so why would that be any different in a dog. The first thing my vet said when she read my byb yorkie papers was oh a little inbreeding going on here and sure enough her immune system is shot. I titer her, take her to the best doctors, specialists, holistic, dermatologist, dr jean dodds for blood work you name it she has had the best care possible and still she is a mess as I cannot change the fact that she probably was poorly bred.
