Some people clip it, but then you have to clip it at least monthly. I decided to grow Joey's out, but it was always getting in his eyes, and I found that Petsilk grooming gel works for keeping the stray hairs out of eyes until hair is long enough for a band. One of the show breeders, Mardelin, recommended Cindra Sculpting Gel, and I think I will order that next time, you want to use something made for dogs, so that it will not harm their eyes if the hair does fall down. Some people use two bands and put the first band in low to hold the short hairs, and others just use a mini-clip to hold the short hairs, there are lots of different options.

This site has some good tips for getting them use to bows and bands, and also how to put in a bow so that they can't take it out. http://www.thedivadogbowtique.com/howto.php
