I didn't use anything while i was growing belle's hair out in case it got in her eyes But I used a clip that can go lower down than a top knot does instead, so I didn't really need to.
You know the sort you have yourself when you are young? the ones that have 2 bars and they sort of "snap" into place as you bend them. I got some really small ones of those from asda - like 12 for two pounds and I gather her hair together and clip it right above her eyes.

Sorry i can't help with the bands and gel, I think we will stay with the clips, they are so fast to put in and look super-cute.
