A microchip is not like lo-jack. "Lo-jack" like services are active which means they "transmit", it is a "turned on" electronic device.
The microchips inserted into our pups are passive - it is only through a third party scan that their information can be accessed.
Remy has a PetLink chip. The only *real* difference I've discerned from the various services is that some have a 9 digit identifier, others 15 digit. If you plan to do any international travel with your pup, the EU requires a microchip - and it must be the 15 digit version. PetLink offers the 15 digit version which is what I chose.
