I don't think you are doing anything wrong! The fact is that he has to be contained while you are at work unless you want him chewing and peeing all over the house. The playpen suggestion might work as an alternative to the laundry room.

Clear deodorant on the woodwork might deter the chewing. It works well for us. (Someone on this list suggested this before me - wish I knew who; I'd love to gvie them credit for their great idea!)

Be sure to give him plenty of things to chew on while you are gone. Stuffed Kongs are great (especially frozen - makes them have to work even harder to get all the goodies out). Bones, toys, etc. You might leave a radio or tv on for him so that the house isn't so quiet.

You might also try feeding him in the laundry room and doing whatever else you can think of to give him more pleasant associations with being in there.
