I have not really found anything that works for ticks other than controlling where I take my dog outside. The fall is a really a tough time because of all the leaf clutter everywhere. Ticks love piles of leaves and damp places and my pup loves to stick his nose in that stuff.
You may want to think about where the dogs are going outside. If they are playing in the woods, under pine trees,near water, or leave piles they will pick up ticks.
When I bring my pup in I brush him down on the light tile floor so I can find what falls off.
