I say you may want to keep looking for a new one regardless of how long he wears it. My Cecilia wears hers' 24/7. It is just like her collar. There are not any chaffing or rubbing issues, but i had to try a few before I found one that was good for her. It is a step in one. It is weird when she doesn't have it on because she comes up to the bed and to get in the car and I use the harness to help her up.
