They were "happily"
married at the time.
I have mixed emotions about the children part as I think there are large breed types that do wonderfully with kids and would never ever bite them. I don't know enough about German Shepards to say this was a good thing or not. I grew up with Labs and Golden Retrievers and would not hesitate to have children around them. My brother has Bernese Mt Dogs and they have been terrific with the kids also. I guess the bottom line is that parents have to be involved no matter what breed is around the kids.
