I don't think it's ear mites. Ear mites are extremely itchy for the dog and a way to tell is to fold their ear down for a second, gently and if they go crazy scratching it after you do this then it's probably ear mites. They would also be scratching a lot.
A little smell and some ear wax is normal all you have to do is take Happy to the vet to get his ears cleaned out. The smell can also be caused by to much hair in the ears which you can have plucked out by a groomer or you can buy the special powder to do it yourself.
