Default Training

Hi there. You sound like me. I also always crate trained and took my dogs outside. With this little one, I made (make) myself nuts because of her being so small. I have gone the whole gammet with her. I started in the kitchen, then went to a pen, slept with her and now a crate. I agree that the pads are a pain (expensive, sometimes they go on it and other times half is off). I agree that a pen (or very large crate) with a pad and a bed is the easiest. they will learn to use the pad and sleep in the ped. My problem with that is that I found that she does know how to use the pad but I am unsure if she knows not to use the floor. I also noticed that the pad gets dirtier quicker because she is not holding it in. If I am not home to change it quick enough then she will go on the floor in front of it. I wasn't there to tell her no. I have finally decided to use a crate (I put a divider in it) during the night and daytime hours that I am not there. I just started this two nights ago. The first night she woke me at 1, 2:30, and 5 am. I took her out of the crate and put her on her pad (which I placed in a dog litter pan). I kept telling her to go potty and she did. I gave her a reat (which she is finally taking) and I put her back into the crate. I also did this during the day. I put her in at 7am and returned at 12:45pm. To my surprise it was kept dry. After that I kept her with me. I brought her back to work and put her on the pad when she was itchy and she went (on command). Last night went a little better. I put her in the crate at 11. She whined to come out at 3 and then at 5 am. She was raring to go at 5am. Dry all night. I took her outside last night. I have been taking her outside to go mostly and use the pad if it is raining or real cold out. This morning she urinated outside, came in and ran around and then ran onto her pad and pooped. I was so excited. Oh course, just when you think you are on a roll....... Today I came home at 12:45pm and she had messed her crate. Bummer. Just when I thought I was somewhere. SO like you, I keep asking myself, should I just ue the pen or an over-sized crate? But..I don't want to give up on this. My goal is for her to hold i longer so hat I know that she can hold it through the day and at night. I also want to know that when she is walking around she KNOWS where to go. I like tohave her going on command. that way I know when it is ok to travel her. I also ask the question about the pee pads. How many? Where? I think I am going to keep one down stairs (near back door and in same room as crate) and one upstairs in the area between bedrooms and dining room. My only question about that is how will she beable to know to run to it when she is in he bedroom at night (and hopefully sleeping with a kid or us)? That is, if she can get off the bed. I had her sleep up there in the beginning. She went on the bottom of th bed. That was when I set up th pen. As for your question, yes, outside training is always better if you can do it. I think they are capable of holding it (I hope). I just hope she proves to be like every other dog and not like laying in it. I also hope, and wonder, can they hold it like a "normal" sized dog. The pen was taking over my house (lol). In conclusion, I do like the idea of outside and if you want (like I am) put a pad out for when she really has o go and you miss her ques. I take her outside and put her on the pad when it is cold, rainy, etc. SHe won't go outside in those weather conditions. A REAl princess....by her own doing (even though she has a rhinestone colar. lol). - Kath
P.S. Sorry so long.

I crate trained them. With these pee pads, don't they stink up the house with urine? How do you let the dogs go on them several times? I can understand picking up poopie quickly but the urine seems like it would smell! Am I misunderstanding the purpose of these? You need to do one or the other right? Crate or pee pads. What do you do when you have company over with all these pee pads all over your house? And if they are pee pad trained, how do you take them places outside with out pee pads. It seems outside trained would make more sense. Please advise me on this, I am not sure what to do?

Thanks,
