Mine had it twice about a month inbetween episodes, and that was almost 6 years ago and knock on wood, he hasn't had it since. When I researched it a few months back, I found that they haven't found the actual cause of HGE, so you really can't do anything to prevent it. I do know that quick treatment is the best way to go, as it is life threatening, and can come on very rapidly. Your MO sounds like the best plan to have in place, HGE is not to be played with.
