I have VPI standard plan and live in So. Cal. I have used the plan several times. It is pretty inexpensive and has paid for itself over and over again. The plan I selected does not cover well care (immunizations, etc) but my Sebastian has had several challenges over his 7 years including a difficult to find bacteria and ACL surgery. I am upgrading to a superior plan this year - he ages out at 8 yrs old (can't upgrade after 8). I recommend insurance to all my friends with pets and many have come back to thank me. I, too have a good amount of emergency money for his care - and you will still need it because the pet insurance is not what human insurance is - they cover a flat amount for specific injuries, services and illness. You can find more information on VPI at Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) - Dog Insurance, Cat Insurance, Pet Health Insurance

Good Luck!
