Yes, a lot of problems come from HOW they land - although a softer surface is certainly better than a hard floor.
The steps are really a great idea. Walmart, Walgreens and Petsmart usually have some under $20 that are great to use with sofas & chairs. I've recently switched from stairs to ramps because my oldest has such bad arthritis and other problems that the stairs just got to be too much for him.
