I think he is probably marking. They tend to do this on any vertical surface that they can. At least he's doing it all in one place.

If you can't get him to hit the inside wall instead of the outside wall I would recommend using a washable potty pad under the box. It would be much easier than constantly cleaning the vinyl table cloth and you can wash it in the washer.
