Vets now believe that it's best if dogs empty it on their own. They empty it each time they poop. Some dogs have a problem with this and adding fiber to the diet can help. Scooting is a sign of problems and the area will be slightly puffy. A vet can show you how to do it, and for Joey there was no added charge for emptying the glands, just the cost of the visit.
