have you tried putting him up on a table while you groom him and double teaming him with your husband? have your husband hold him on the table and distract him with treats while you brush him. i'd start doing it now while his hair is short and mat free so he won't be bothered with the tugging. just run a comb all over him a few times while he's getting cookies. this might do the trick.
